Sex-Sorted semen allows you to control the final result, as we can either use male-sex or female-sex sperm for ICSI, reducing the number of unwanted foals and saving you time and resources.
To initiate sex-sorted semen services, you will need to coordinate the shipment of conventional semen to ST Genetics, where they will do their patented Sorting process. Upon completion, they will ship the frozen sex-sorted semen to our laboratory for the ICSI procedure.

Sex-Sorted Semen: An Explanation
To acquire sex-sorted semen, pure (conventional) semen must undergo a patented sorting process (ST Genetics), separating X-chromosome bearing sperm cells (female) from Y-chromosome bearing sperm cells (male). These sub-populations are subsequently frozen for future use, just like conventional semen.
The sorting procedure leverages the slight difference in DNA content between X- and Y-chromosome bearing sperm cells. X chromosomes contain more DNA than the Y-chromosome, facilitating their separation using a cell sorter and flow cytometry. See the diagram on the right (Source: ST Genetics).
How accurate is the Sorting Process?
This sorting technique demonstrates a targeted accuracy of 95%. Even though various factors could contribute to the final accuracy, the purity range never falls below 90%. (ST Genetics)
